Owen was born in Yorkshire and served an apprenticeship and worked at Bristol Aircraft from 1947-1957. Its rumoured there wasn't much about the Bristol Centauraus Aero-engine he didn't know about. After he moved to the Cambridge Area to work for the "Welding Institute" he was ideally situated to become one of the founding members of the Duxford Aviation Society and also joined The Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society which supports The Shuttleworth Collection. During the 1990’s he was SVAS secretary.
At Duxford, he was involved in the construction of Robs Lamplough's Fokker Dr.1 Replica, restoration to airworthiness of Spitfire Vc AR501 in 1975 and Sea Hurricane 1 Z7015 in 1995.
Owen was also a member of the Royal Observer Corps from 1947 when it was reformed until it was finally stood down in the early 1990’s.
